How to Help Beetles in Your Garden

Posted by Courtney - Planters Patch's Resident Bug Lady on

Beetles come in many forms in your garden.

The most commonly identified beetle in Australia are Christmas Beetles! Which are unforunetly becoming very hard to find year on year... Christmas Beetles are a type of scarab beetle. Which is typically considered a pest. Many of us see a curl grub and throw it right to the chooks. However, unless they are in a pot or you dig up 5-6 larave with your shovel load, they aren't going to destroy your garden!

However, they provide an essential ecosysem service both as a larvae and adults. They are decomposers which help clean up all the leaf litter in your garden. They also turn over the soil, helping keep it full of nutrients and easy for plant roots to move through. So it is important to think twice before throwing scarab larvae out of your garden.
