How to Help Native Bees in Your Garden

Native Bees in Australia come in a range of shapes and sizes. Some live alone and others in a hive not too dissimilar to European bees.

Native colony bees love to nest in tree hollows, fallen logs, bird boxes, and any hollow space they can find! If you have the space, leave old fallen logs to provide shelter for these bees. Solitary bees can also use material like fallen logs to nest. Solitary bees often use long, narrow splits to make their nest. Bamboo stakes are a great home for these bees!

If you see a native bee home, best to leave them be. Place flower pots near their home to provide easy access to food, especially in the colder months.

Helpful tips:

- Provide a shallow clean water source for them to drink

- They need simple and easy-to-access flowers

- Plenty of shrubs to lay their eggs

- Plant pollen and nectar-rich plants such as Achillea, Lobularia, Leucanthemum, Anemone, and Salvia to help feed them
