How to Help Welcome Swallows in your Garden

Welcome swallows flourish in almost every type of habitat, they are present in almost the entire country of Australia!

They are great pest hunters! A great friend to have in your garden. They have fantastic acrobatic flying skills catching bugs mid flight! The hunt in open spaces so they will love a clear lawn to themselves.

These swallows often return to their next year after year so if you see a nest not in use, leave it be as they will repair and reuse it the following season. If you see a nest fallen from it's spot, keep it near the original location as they will reuse the materials from the fallen nest to rebuild when they return!

They like to nest in man made structures such as sheds, rock walls and support structures (such as under verandahs). To politely remove their capacity to nest in an unwanted space you can ensure you keep doors and windows shut, place tall or large objects in the way to block their smooth landings or block off the area fully with walls. If you use bird netting please ensure it is taut and has no slack so birds, bats and other friendly flyers don't get tangled and caught which can cause them much distress and can lead to major injury; ensure you check the netting regularly!

Helpful tips:

- Provide a clean water source for them to bathe and drink

- Allow them to use your spaces for nesting if you are able

- Don't bait/spray bugs to prevent bioaccumulation
