Damselflies are very helpful pollinators!
Commonly mistaken for dragonflies, damselflies wings fold backwards, where by dragonflies spread their wings out to the sides. Damselflies wings are much more delicate, so protect them closely. Damselflies eyes also are placed on the side of their head compared to dragonflies whop have them closer together at the top and front of their face.
Damselflies provide an essential ecosystem service. They are efficient pollinators! In their nymph stage (baby stage) while in the water, they consume other baby bugs such as mosquitoes, flies and other insect larvae.
The presence of damselfies is a key indicator of a healthy water souce/ecosystem
Helpful tips:
- Provide a shallow still water source
- Provide cover around the water for them to hide in
- Provide nectar rich plants for the adults to feed on
